In 2012, we saw many celebrities sport bright colors like hot pink or bright blue. Funky colors are here to stay, yet in 2013, people are opting for pastels rather than brighter shades. We’ve seen soft, delicate purples on both stars & runway models, & fashion photographers have shot models with light turquoise locks. While most only dyed a few strands last year, this year, people are going for all over color.

Red is back in a huge way. Many redheaded celebrities had a banner year in 2012, which means many women began to covet their locks. In years past, bright reds & burgundies ruled, yet this year, people are aiming for more a more natural look. Coppers & light auburns appear to be the biggest colors, & strawberry blondes moreover seem to be on the rise.
Platinum blonde is bigger than ever. Many are sporting a blonde so pale, it’s practically white. While celebrities are usually hair color trendsetters, this rise in popularity was influenced by Daenerys Targaryen on the hit TV show “Game of Thrones”. This color is dramatic, yet complex to pull off, which means it certainly isn’t a trend for everyone. Talk to your stylist approximately whether or not it will work for you.

One of the biggest trends is balayage, a hair coloring technique popularized by the French. It involves handsweeping dye on to the hair, so that the overall color is much more natural. Balayage isn’t new, yet it’s suddenly exploded in popularity. This is thanks in no small part to stars like Rihanna & Jessica Alba, who have begun sporting tresses colored this way. With more & more salons are beginning to offer balayage color, this trend shows no signs of slowing down.
Over the last few years, many women chose to brighten up a dirty blonde or light brown hair color. This year, colors formerly seen as mousy are hot! Celebrities & fashion icons are choosing sandy, subdued shades, & some are even letting a little grey show through. Think back to the mink-like colors that dominated in days of yore. This year, those colors will be huge.
In keeping with other natural trends, subtle highlights have become hugely popular. Stars like Mila Kunis & Nicole Richie are paying for highlights that barely differ from their natural shade. The idea is to keep your natural color, yet make it look more rich & multidimensional. If you’d like to achieve this look, ask your stylist to donate you highlights that are two shades lighter than your natural color.
